International Registration Plan IRP

The International Registration Plan refers to an agreement wherein if a carrier hauls freight across many jurisdictions, the owner is obligated to report the driven mileage in each state as well as pay each state’s taxes annually. Who needs it? If the gross weight of your vehicle is 26,000 pounds or more, if it has 3 or more axles or if it is a power unit or trailer exceeding 26,000 pounds, you would have to register under an IRP.

IRP Plates- Once the IRP and IFTA accounts have been set up, you will receive an Apportioned License Plate for the power unit as well as an Apportioned Cab Card which lists all of approved states you can legally operate in.

At our company, we can plate vehicles that have a gross weight of up to 80,000 pounds. We can take care of your Illinois plates. Simply provide us with the paperwork showing ownership of the vehicle, proof of Illinois residency and valid commercial driver’s licenses of all your drivers and we will process the paperwork for you hassle-free.

What do you need to apply for an IRP?

  • An IFTA permit, which shows you are registered with IFTA.
  • A USDOT number, which is a number used to identify vehicles by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
  • A FMCSA authorization, which allows a carrier to transport goods across other jurisdictions.
